Sun
The Sun is our star and the centre of the Solar System, providing the energy that makes life on Earth possible. Although about 150 million kilometres away, its relative proximity allows us to photograph extraordinary details of its constantly changing surface and atmosphere.
Solar images can be captured in visible light, revealing the photosphere and sunspots, or in H-alpha (Hα), revealing the dynamic chromosphere with prominences, filaments and active regions. Special events such as solar eclipses and planetary transits across the Sun offer further opportunities to photograph our star from completely different perspectives.
