Open Clusters

Open clusters are relatively young families of stars born together from the same giant molecular cloud. They usually contain from a few dozen to several thousand stars and have an irregular, loosely concentrated appearance. They are mainly found within the disk and spiral arms of the Milky Way, where star formation is most active. Because their gravitational binding is relatively weak, interactions with other stars and molecular clouds gradually disperse their members, typically over hundreds of millions of years.
